Conclusion
NetBeans installs pretty neatly, as long as you meet the requirements:
- JDK and no JRE (it looks like Eclipse can only use a JRE).
- You give the NetBeans installer enough time.
The key to your sanity is really to use:
tail /var/log/install.log
