As I am a rising senior in high school with a lot of time on my hands, I am able to look into different areas of engineering to see what major I want to do and which university will interest me the most. As I only took one class about computer science, I wanted to learn about it in detail using cognitive ai. Cognitive AI is a website providing courses to help you learn about computer science and everything that surrounds it, like the cloud. The website also informs the student about other tools like different programming languages that can be used for different purposes and what those purposes are. The website works with IBM, and once a class is completed, will earn you a badge and certification from IBM.

Introduction to Data Science

This course included many videos that inform the student about what data science means to people who work in that field and how they view their jobs. After this introduction, they start informing the student about what data science can be used for. Some examples teach you how you can use data science to help businesses grow. The has quizzes at the end of each module and ends with a final test. The quizzes and final test each account for 50% of your final grade. However, you will need a 70% to pass the class and get the certification.

Data Science Hands-on with Open Source Tools

This one, like the first course I took, explores the different tools that can be used for data science, but goes more in-depth and than the initial class taken. This course also has more exercises than the first course, creating an image in the student’s head about which tool should they use for the different activities they would want to do. The grading is similar to the first course, as you need to get 70% with the same conditions.

Data Science Methodology

As the name suggests, this course explores the major steps that are needed to fix a data science problem. This course explores how to collect specific data in a large data set, how to prepare the data for your customers, and how to evaluate that data. To me, this course resembles what a data scientist would have to do as their regular job. The grading is the same as the other courses.

For completing these first three courses, I earned an extra badge:

IBM Cloud Essentials v2

This course was the biggest I took out of the five I completed. As its name implies, this course goes in-depth about the essentials that are needed to understand the IBM Cloud and its many tools. On top of showing how to use the cloud and its tools, it provides instructions on how to access it, create an account, and use it, showing the student how to take advantage of this new tool. The course also mentions open-source software like Kubernetes and containerization software and teaches the student about them. Finally, it also provides examples to what circumstances would one be better than the other. The grading is the same as all the other courses.

Python 101 for Data Science

This course is just a sum-up of a PLTW (Project Leads The Way) computer science class I took, as it provides the students with the basics of python and teaches them what certain keywords mean. The main exercises were giving the student pictures of different codes and asking what the outcome will be depending on the input. If you don’t know python and would like to understand it better, this would be a great course for you. The grading is the same as the other courses.

Building a Foundation Through the Summer

If you have time on your hands and don’t know what to do, I would encourage learning about computer science via cognitive ai. Once you have completed a course, you will be able to add badges and certifications to your linked in, boosting your profile and increasing your chances to get employed next time you look for a job. As someone who doesn’t know much about computer science, I found these courses to be interesting.
